Dothan's Highland Oaks among the nation's 10 best public courses

For those who like to play as well as watch, Alabama has become something of a sports legend with the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Stretching from the Appalachian Mountains of northern Alabama to the flat- lands surrounding Mobile Bay in the South, a total of 18 championship courses are spread out over seven ecologically diverse locations.

Golfers are offered 324 holes of some of the most challenging golf in America at the most reasonable prices. Golf Digest called Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail "the best thing ever done for public golf." Senior Gofer Magazine said, "Alabama's galaxy of great courses will change your image of public golf forever. "A tour of the Trail will show you just how spectacular it really is.

All of the courses are within five to 15 miles of an interstate, and each stop on the Trail is within two hours driving time of another. Each course is intriguingly different, showcasing the natural beauty and geography of the location. Each course is stamped with Jones' trademark design-huge tri-bowl, undulating greens; a myriad of uneven lies, and assorted steep-faced, gigantic bunkers.

Among the most unique aspects of the Trail are the tee locations. The tee markers on the Trail are pegged to ability level, not age or gender. The courses were designed to measure as short as 4,700 yards and as long as about 7,700 yards, with as many as 12 tee boxes in-between.

Although Robert Trent Jones is a legendary Golf Hall of Fame course architect with more than 500 courses to his credit, he feels this masterpiece is one of his life's greatest achievements. Most golfers who have chosen to battle par along the Trail find it hard to dispute his feelings.
