Southeast Alabama Agriculture Overview
Catfish Farming
Statewide, sales of catfish in Alabama increased 4 percent to $52.8 million during
1996, from $50.9 million in 1995. The catfish industry throughout the state continues to
show a moderate rate of growth.
Districtwise, interest in catfish production has been
primarily centered in Barbour County, where over 250 acres of catfish production ponds
exist. According to agricultural economists, catfish marketings are increasing in other
southern states, however, the lack of a local processing plant is vitally needed in order
to stimulate growth in this industry in the district.
